When will I apply for a TIE.
My wife and I have been here for 17 months. Our house is paid for. We had a great solicitor and as far as I know. We are totally legal. My question is, when or how do we get the TIE ?

Hi Mutt,
When you say, "as far as I know, we are totally legal", are you both in possession of the green, credit card size residency certificates? Also, if you've lived in Spain for 17 months, you should also have submitted income tax returns in Spain. If either, or both, of these are outstanding, you need to make arrangements to regularise your position asap.
Kind regards,
Kim

Thanks Kimmy. Yes we both have residency (green) cards and last year we had to see a tax guy at our solicitors. We are both just retired. Just wondering. Do we see the tax man every year.?

You must submit a tax return for the first year of fiscal residence, even if no tax is due.
In subsequent years, if tax is due then you obviously have to submit a return.
If no tax is due, then you may still have to submit a return - it depends on the thresholds set by Hacienda and how many sources of income you have. I've not seen the current criteria, but look at:
In my opinion, it's best to submit a return every year even if no tax is due. Doing it yourself sounds daunting, but once you've done the first one then future years are easy.
