Shops and restaurants - open over Christmas and New Year?

Hello,
We have recently moved to the area and this will be our first Christmas and New Year here. We'll have visitors over Christmas - we have Christmas Lunch booked for 7 of us but are wondering if it will be necessary to book restaurants for the days just before and just after Christmas, or whether there is likely to be plenty of availability - for 7. Are many restaurants, supermarkets and shops open over the Christmas period? Especially wondering about Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
Any advice very welcome. Many thanks!
