Hi all

We moved to Oliva in March & love it :-)

I brought my sewing machine from the UK & would love to resume dressmaking & also have some mending to do.

Is there a haberdashers in town or nearby? (We have a car to get out & about) I'm unable to buy the bias-binding & tape I need from the Chinese bazaars & the Patchwork shop is also unable to assist.

Also, is there an outlet selling fabric, but for dressmaking in particular, not soft-furnishings?

Thank you

Thanks, that helps with haberdashery ;-)

Just nipped into a shop on Carrer Botànic Cavanilles, but as there's shoes in the window, I wouldn't have known they sold sewing notions in the back too!

I had the same.......went last week to a bar & they'd turned it into a. Shoe-shop. I found another bar though. Good luck & keep finding. Villas

Hi Nancy, I too have always been a dressmaker and soft furnishing aficionado. I have found that although there are several soft furnishing shops in various towns, in my opinion much of it is not very high quality and fairly dated in design. There is a shop in the Main Street in Javea port which has some quite nice stuff to order, but it will be minimum quantities etc.As for dressmaking,I am afraid it’s a lost cause here these days; Spanish women no longer do it and the shops have disappeared.

There is a large warehouse on the road to Alcalali from Pedreguer, on the outskirts, called Perez y Perez where they have a very good selection of haberdashery, except that they don’t sell Guterman thread. They also have a large selection of fabrics on the roll, both for furnishing and dressmaking. The dressmaking fabrics, in my opinion, are not remotely what anyone with an interest in quality would contemplate, mainly cheap polyester prints and so forth. Some of the furnishings aren’t bad.

I now use an on line German company, with online presence in most countries, I started using them in U.K. as shops began to close. It’s called myfabrics with variations in the suffix to indicatecountry. They have thousands of fabrics.

Thank you Stephanie

I love to feel & handle fabric so didn't want to buy online, but looks as though I'll have to so will check-out the myfabrics website.  I brought a couple of dress lengths from England so will sew these-up first, though with work & plenty to do & see here, it may be a while before anything is finished anyway!

If you ever get to Alicante, have a look at Julian Lopez - it's very near the El Corte by the railway station.

My wife slipped up last time she went there, as she got her numbers mixed up and asked for cinquenta metros instead of quince metros. Fortunately they queried it.
