Good morning all we have a external wall which we would like have a flat white finish applied. We feel we have two choices or maybe someone has more alternatives?

Either traditional sand and cement render painted with a masonry paint or Capa fina blanco with no painting required. I have been told after a year or two the Capa option will still need painting as it will discolour.

Any advice greatly received.

Warren.

Either option would work, provided the wall isn't subject to rising damp. If it is, and you use render which you then paint, or Capa Fina which is waterproof, then you might in time find the coating shelling off the wall.

Personally I don't like using cement render, because Spanish sand is so coarse that I find it difficult to work with.

Thanks Jim, yes in England you can by the special fine rendering sand but I can't see I have looked at this, my main concern was having to paint it should the Capa discolour.

You can buy bags of sand better than the normal bulk stuff. I don't know if the description varies between different suppliers, but at the builders merchants I normally go to it's called arena viva.

I did think about what you said about Capa Fina discolouring. I'm not sure, but as it's a waterproof coating then I wouldn't think it would discolour, and that any dirt on it would be on the surface and would wash off. Just my thoughts - don't assume I'm correct.

One of our walls has breathable monocapa on it. I painted the higher part of the wall, but left the bottom few feet unpainted so any rising damp could evaporate. Three years on, that's still looking OK (touch wood).

Thanks Jim, cappa it is then as the dis colour is dirt which should wash off. Many thanks for your constructive advice !
