Which bank? If your Spanish one wanting your UK one then they want your National Insurance number. If your UK one wanting your Spanish one then they want your Spanish NIE.
Both are your Tax Ident Numbers.

Interestingly, N26 didn't ask for my tax reference, they wanted my actual tax return.
I told them I wasn't giving them my tax return. They told me if I didn't give it to them they would close the account and as of the date of that message they put the account in "restricted measures" - this meant I couldn't transfer money into the account but could transfer it out!?!
So having manually moved my DDs etc across to an alternate provider, I transferred the remaining balance across and closed the account.
I guess I could have provided it with loads of it redacted but I don't see why they wanted that specific document as opposed to other identity proving documents.
As an aside, I recall being asked for my tax reference number (possibly worded differently) about 10 years or so ago when I wasn't resident and was trying to withdraw money from I think a Sabadell cash machine. I think I input the 6 numbers of my NI number and it let me progress - nothing ever came of it so not sure why the cash machine had even asked for it!
