I used the comparison site ‘DoYouSpain’ which is usually a good place to start for car hire. Unfortunately I picked Olecar. Alarm bells began to ring when I picked up the car, it was dusk at the time, but they wanted me to inspect the car for damages. I noticed 3 or 4 things that they hadn’t noticed and then had to sign an iPad type device. As I had separate insurance I didn’t take their over priced ‘extra’ insurance of more that 25 euros per day, more than hiring the car! However when I returned the car they went over it with a magnifying glass to find anything they could that wasn’t on the original list of ‘damages’. They even asked for a petrol receipt to make sure I hadn’t filled up the car too far away! Eventually he found something, a tiny mark underneath the bumper which I hadn’t noticed the evening I picked it up. £269 euros is the charge for this apparent ‘damage’ which most probably could be polished off. So beware this is not a reputable company!

Standard operating practice with almost all the cheaper companies . You're not the first and you won't be the last.

When picking the car up always have a torch. Spend at least 10 mins going over the car looking  for damages not on the rental documents. Then if travelling with someone else get them to do the same. Hands and knees stuff. Don't worry about  piss.ing the staff off if you identify new defects

Get an annual hire car excess policy usually about £39 per annum.
