I am aware that people take a car to Spain and pay for yearly parking in, for example, Alicante Airport. They may travel to Spain on a number of occasions during the year and use this car as a runaround.  I would like people's opinion on how this can be done legally from an insurance point of view.

This practice may have been discussed previously but I havn' t seen it so far

Thanks Grahame,

I can understand that would be good given that the car is registered , insured etc in Spain.

What I'm really interested in is U.K. and Irish registered cars which are used in this way.

A non-Spanish-registered car can be kept in Spain for no more than 6 months before it must be re-registered in Spain (or removed from Spain for 6 months).

A UK car of MOT-age (i.e. >3 years old and not an MOT-exempt classic) cannot be MOT tested in Spain.

So a UK car cannot be kept in Spain, long term.

That said, Liberty Seguros will insure a UK-plated car.

The Guardia have the ability to interrogate the status of any UK plated car found in Spain and there have been many incidents of banning from the road and even seizure, sometimes from the road outside an owners property when they are not even in the country!

They are not likely to become less diligent in the future or beyond the end of the transition period on Dec 31st.

If you want to keep a car here than Spanish is your only option.

You can pick up something perfectly adequate for purpose for say €2k or less.
