Hello Mary,
Nice to meet a gardening fan. 😊
Of course window box gardening can be wonderful. You’ve mentioned two probable problems straight away though.
1. The Sun. If your window area receives a lot of June to September sun, not much will survive very long. Perhaps on shaded window areas you might be more successful. But strong drying winds will do damage as well.
2. Aqua. The pots will require a LOT of water. If you are there at least you can save some clean household water and keep that to water plants. But someone would need to water window boxes once or twice daily. Not to mention the Aqua bills!!
Gardening season feels so different in Spain don’t you think. Roses in full bloom at Christmas, lovely. The bougainvillea outside our home seems permanently in bloom.
However our spider plants in window boxes have survived a few years in shaded side of balcony. Our neighbour has lovely big succulent type plants on their balcony but have permanent awning providing shade.
Perlagoniums seem to survive for quite a while anywhere. Pointsettias would be lovely for December/ January. So lovely to see them planted outdoors.
Plenty of herbs will do well in window boxes. So yes plant now, perhaps give one or two window boxes a try. Don’t buy expensive plants at first until you experiment. Think annuals and you can’t go wrong.
Luckily we live next to a lovely botanical garden (part of reason we bought our property) so can visit often.
Happy gardening
