What is the latest with Health Insurance for Brits moving over ? I was working in Majorca for 18 years and had to pay the autonomous that fluctuated yearly. We have been told now you have to pay a minimum of 60 euro's a month each for voluntary Insurance, is this true ? We are not retired but in a position were we can move even though we have a property here in the UK to sell after moving. We do like Torrevieja and Guardamar. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Steve,

It sounds like you're talking about the Convenio Especial which, after you've been resident in Spain for 1 year (sounds like you more than satisfy that criteria!), you can opt to pay into at a cost of Eu 60 per person, per month, rising to Eu 157 per person, per month from the age of 65.  This generally works out less expensive than private health insurance and although neither service pays for prescriptions, the CE does cover pre-exisiting conditions, which are often excluded under PHI.

This is not the same as Autonomo (self-employed) contributions which you were making - after 18 years contributions, doesn't this entitle you to some level of state healthcare?

Once you reach UK State Retirement age - and assuming that Brexit doesn't vary the entitlement - you can apply for an S1 from NHS Business Services Authority to transfer your entitlement to free healthcare to Spain.

Kind regards,

Kim
