Could anybody advise me about gaining medical cover with the S1 I applied for . Does this only become valid when you I become a resident or can I apply for healthcare before residency I am a bit confused about this.

You will need your residency before your S1 allows you to apply for your SIP card, which gives you access to the Spanish public health system
