Hi

I have private health insurance for my wife who ended up in quiron hospital but the insurance company said it was a pre existing condition so I ended up paying €2500 for her stay. Seems like a waste of money for private but what medical cover would she receive from the Spanish health care system or is their a private company that will cover pre existing conditions

The problem was hbp and since has had a small heart attack and one stent fitted here in Britain

If you are receiving UK retirement pension you can apply for healthcare through the S1 healthcare scheme which is paid for by the UK government. The healthcare covers all pre existing conditions.

You could also join the Convenio especial Spanish healthcare scheme which also covers pre existing conditions.

If I remember correctly, if you are under 65 years the cost is €57 a month and over 65 years its €157 per month.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply, where does one register for the convenia especial and what is the benefit of it over the S1 cover

ie does it give access to private doctor or do you still just visit the centro salud

The S1 healthcare scheme is favourable in comparison.

Under the S1 scheme the UK government pays for all healthcare except prescription costs. Depending on your income and tax declaration you could get your prescriptions free.

The Convenio Especial will cost you as I mentioned in my previous post plus you will pay full cost of prescriptions.

Neither give you access to the private hospital and you will need to visit the local salud.
