We found we learnt much more from renting. When you are in a hotel you learn where restaurants and bars are. If you are renting you learn more about daily living. It can also give you an idea of which direction you wish to face, how high up you want to be, which are the useful areas to be etc. We also did extensive searches online before we went to see anything and walked to see the area before deciding whether to view, as we didn't want to be swayed by a lovely property in a not so good area.

Ann - Hopefully you have been answered over the hotel or renting and can make your decision.  I bought just over a year ago over looking the main promenade at Playa Del Cura, Torrevieja front line, I walk on the promenade every night it is safe and very clean, there are numerous shops and supermarkets on your doorstep. So you don't need a car.  The main bus station is about 30 minutes walk so you can get a bus straight from Alicante airport to the centre of the town and walk to your apartment.

You have the usual street sellers, but just be polite if they approach you to buy sunglasses etc and they are always polite.

Hopefully you will be won over by Torrevieja.
