I have a 2005 VW Golf MK5 1.6 fsi  that according to the on-board computer requires an engine service. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced English speaking garage that has experience of working on VW's  and could do this service and re-set the service light?

I know that there is a VW dealership in Torrevieja, but they want to rip my eyeballs out for a service.

If you mean the engine management light then here is a quick tip:

Check the brake lights!!!

I kid you not, admittedly on a MKIV, when I had the same thing it turned out that both brake light bulbs had blown and that was VW's way of alerting a driver to it.

Thanks, but it's not the engine management light. The MK5 has a separate warning light specifically for the all the lights. Every time I turn on the ignition I get a message on the dash  saying ''Service Jetzt'' which is German for ''Service Now''. I bought the car in January from a dealer and it had a full service before I picked it up, but it was done by the dealer. I've only done 3,000 kilometers, but the on-board computer was not updated at the time, so the car doesn't know that it was serviced.

While the terminology might vary if the indicator is reset after a service there are no circumstances in which it should reappear in just 3000km.

This begs one of two questions - or both.

1. Why was the reset not done, it can be done by an owner so a dealer has no excuse for not doing it.

2. The claimed service was never done and you were at best misled and at worst or lied to, remember a stamp in a service book does not of itself prove anything.

Personally then I'd be going back to the dealer and in the absence of convincing answers to those questions be demanding a new and free service, including a proper reset of the warning.

If that's not practical then have a service carried out by VW dealer then send the bill to the dealer you bought the car from with a letter justifying it.

For reasonably conclusive proof of how long (in terms of engine running time) the oil has been in the engine you can have it analysed for not much money.
