Hi purchase on first property nearly complete, my solicitor advised that the water and electricity companies automatically set up the direct debit from my account and I initially can't set an amount although the property won't be seeing much use initially... Anyone any thoughts on what they charge and how to change to suit my usage? Tia

Have a read of Jim's Guides which are in a tab at the top of the page and scroll down to "Utilities in Spain". Please do not contact Jim direct.
The price for electricity is according to the Potencia, in other words the amount of power available to you. The level required will depend on your usage. For example, if you are in an apartment with the air con running full blast with the washing machine, kettle, toaster, oven, microwave all on at once, you are likely to trip it out.
There are various packages and we find Plan Noche best for us as we put all the big users on overnight, on timers, to take advantage of the cheaper rates and we don't have air con as we prefer ceiling fans. Another option is choosing the hours you have cheaper electricity and you need to make sure the supplier doesn't put you on the standard rate and charge you for insurance you don't need.

Hi, we bought last year and were automatically connected with Hidraqua for water and Iberdrola for electric, I’ve found both to be very good, they send an email bill a few days before the direct debit is taken - monthly for electric & quarterly for water. After a bit of thought I went to the office and moved to an 8 hour plan, so from 9am to 12noon & 5pm to 10pm, we have half price electric, these times suit when I am cooking, using the washing machine, ironing, heating & showers etc. I also bought a timer for the water boiler socket to heat during these times.

I recently signed up for Iberdrola’s added 15% discount for 1 year due to the Covid effect on usage as a permanent resident.
