My bank wants a copy of my NIE certificate

My bank wants a copy of my husbands and my NIE certificate they said it for the police we have had our apartment for 13 years and never been asked for this before they have frozen by bank account until they receive the certificate but I don't know where it is I know the number but l live in the uk and my husband is fighting cancer

Can anyone shed any light on this

What has the police got to do with it

I have a mortgage

And need the bank so I can pay it

We have never lived in spain just came for holidays and we have never been ask for the certificate at anytime I don't remember havinvg one although I have the number we have been asked for out passport a good few times

I will as ask if the suma bill will do

Although the bank is not very useally helpful

I agree with what Ray says.

You say you have a mortgage, implying that you own a property in Spain.

As you are non-resident then you are obliged to do an annual tax return and pay non-resident tax on that property. Not doing so is the most common reason for an embargo being placed on a non-resident bank account.

I don't understand why the bank should ask for your NIE. Banks do an annual report of all bank account holders to the tax office, and part of the information they provide to them is the NIE number of account holders.
