Nonsense. Some hire companies will say you need it but below is the details from the uk government website stating that you do not require it.

I take it you are from the UK?

Not that I can find anywhere. I you are concerned then pay the £5.50 for peace of mind.

Hi John, I had read this and as I said you don’t need it but some hire companies ask for it for some strange reason (old paper license might be 1 reason) but if not sure then for peace of mind spend the £5.50

Hi Dickie,

I don't believe "Spain" has said this, but certainly some Spanish hire car companies have been applying their own rules for some months now.  Note that on the Gov.UK website, it says, "You do not need an international driving permit (IDP) to visit and drive in the EU, Switzerland, Iceland or Liechtenstein.  You might need an IDP to drive in some EU countries and Norway if you have: a paper driving licence, or a licence that was issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man":

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/driving-in-the-eu

This is consistent with the article in The Guardian.  The reason an IDP is required for people who still have a paper driving licence is because they don't provide photo ID.  Nevertheless, irrespective of what Gov.UK says, if Spanish hire car companies have made a commercial decision to require an IDP for all UK citizens hiring their vehicles, that's their prerogative.  As Pedro has said, £5.50 is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Dickie,

don't worry, if you did get a 500euro fine you'll be the first one and you could probably make much more than that by selling your story to the UK press.

Aitch.
