I have an idp just in case but they are not a legal requirement. As previously mentioned, many hire car companies are putting this in their Ts&Cs. I’ve hired a car three times in the last year but have never been asked for the idp.

It was courtesy of a friend of mine who uses that most repugnant platform - that I call bitchbook - that he assured me quite resolutely that I was wrong and he was right re schengen requirements on a UK visitor to EU. 

I trusted him, not having the intelligence to question his source and so, I was not aware it was simply what he had 'heard on facebook' and, ultimately, it was fortuitous that my flights were subsequently cancelled by the airline and so, I got away with it and could then re-book within the rules. 

Facebook (bitchbook), twitter, tik tok, insta.... (yawn.) 

Long and dull account but, to say.. 

NOT the definitive place for important info to be 'issued'  by some anonymous, unaccountable keyboard tapper. 

Rather too high a percentage of subliminally egotistical people who, for reasons unknown, publish as fact when (in fact) it was only ever what they thought they knew. 

Read it on Facebook, no doubt.

The story is fatuous from the get go as car hire companies cannot 'fine' anyone for anything, you hire at their price and under their T&Cs - or you don't.

If those T&Cs say that you need an IDP but without it it will cost you €500 more that's something else but not a fine.

I have just come back from Spain a few days ago and we hired a car through Centauro based at Alicante Airport and we were both (my OH and I) only asked for our UK DL's. There was no mention of an IDP even though I had read the same as you prior to us flying out in Dec 22. 

However as others have advised the process is very simple over here from what I have read - you simply go to the Post Office with your £5.50 and get it issued there and then. I for one will probably go and get one before I return in 3 weeks time just in case there are any dramas.
