The Spanish Highway Code states that when overtaking a cyclist you must give 1.5 meters if you can not do not overtake.

I think the Spanish know that and long time residents, but it’s the holiday visitors that are trying to get me.

It's now the same in the UK so no excuse.

You should not assume that all visitors come from the UK

I feel a lot safer cycling here in Spain but there are still local drivers that will give me near misses usually at roundabouts as they don’t like slowing as they approach or stopping when they should and sometimes the odd impatient moron overtaking from the opposite direction coming at me head on and so close I feel the draft as they pass me, luckily this is a fairly rare occurrence.

I find there are far less close overtakes from behind on Spanish roads than in the UK. However, I too have experienced many drivers coming head on, driving on the wrong side of the road leaving less than 1.5 metres as they pass.  It really is quite an experience to have a car travelling towards you on your side of the road at 80-100 kph.

It is also good to know that bicycles where allowrd on multilane roads and motorways are not permitted to overtake motor vehicles.
