Hi

My name is Garry and myself and my wife are hoping to move to the villamartin area permanently in the next few years.

We intend to sell our property in England and buy a small property in Spain and live from monies from our sale and I intend to do some work if possible? As I run a property maintenance company in England and I could use my skills for people in Spain ?

I’m 56 so plenty of life in me to continue to work and hopefully have more time to spend with my wife in the lovely Spanish sun ?

Can anyone advise me on the steps to take as I’ve heard so many different and complicated barriers that may now be in place?

I just want to get everything right .

Looking forward to your advice.

Thanks Garry

Hi,

If you are a UK passport holder:

Firstly, since Brexit, you will need to apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

If you intend to retire to Spain permanently you will need to apply for a non lucrative visa but you are not allowed to work.

If you want to come to Spain permanently and find work you will need to apply for a job while you are still living in the UK and if you are successful with your job application then your prospective employer will need to sponsor you with a work visa. Your prospective employer will need to prove that there is no EU citizen to fill the position. All jobs in Spain have to be offered to an EU citizen first.

All visa applications will need a financial and healthcare requirement.

Since Brexit you can't just move to Spain and apply for work.

If you are successful with your visa application then you can move over to Spain and apply for residency.

I would advise to rent somewhere for 90 days first to get a proper feeling of the area and give you time to look at properties to buy and work options then if that goes well get a gestor to do all the official paperwork you will need.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the information.

I understand we need an income of £28000 per year to move to Spain ?

Is that correct? Can we use savings instead as a proof of intention as there will be substantial money after the sale of our house in the uk .

Thanks Ga

Part income and part savings is often accepted but if you are successful with your visa application then you will need to prove the same financial requirements on years 2 & 4 otherwise your visa becomes invalid.

The financial requirements for the first person is around €28,000 per annum plus around €6,500 for any additional family members, so a couple would need €34,000 per annum.

You both will also need full private healthcare paid for a full year.

Your wife is an EU citizen so she can move to Spain under freedom of movement and as her spouse you are entitled to move with her on the same terms for residency.
