Red Day 11th June

Why is it a red day today 11th June. Even all the shops except for restaurants and cafes are closed in the boulevard.
They always do close on Sundays. The Valencia Region laws do not allow them to open on Sundays except at certain times.
Next Sunday is when Summer opening hours start and the shops will be open. The shops in tourist designated areas will then open every Sunday until the first Sunday in January whereas those in non tourist areas will close in the middle of September and only open the Sundays before public holidays and leading up to Christmas.
If you want to shop on Sundays in non allowed opening days you have to travel to Murcia.

It's a right royal pain in the armpit isn't it?
A partial way around it is to get your basics on such Sundays from a local fuel filling station. But if you have a car, it's not far down the coast to the border with Murcia, where the shops are still open, including the Dos Mares shopping centre.

Hi Marcliff, thank you for the helpful explanation. So simply Put it is down to Spanish legislation which is fair enough. There was me thinking it could be a local religious tradition.

I agree, I'm sure that we can all cope with shops opening 6 days a week. I was raised in medium size town with shops shut all day Sundays and also Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and the world didn't stop turning.
