Hello, I have just joined this forum as my husband and I are exploring re-locating to Villamartin when we take early retirement next year. We are at the beginning of our journey, but we've managed to narrow down the area we would like to live in, so we are busy looking at potential properties and if you don't mind, will most likely be asking quite a few questions of the group, so many thanks in advance for tips and advice :-)
Hello and welcome to the forum. Would you mind letting us know if you are from the UK as Brexit could mean major changes after the transition period ends?

Hi there, yes, we are in the UK. I totally agree and we are delaying doing anything concrete until we know what the situation will be post-brexit.
One of the main sticking points after the transition period is that unless agreements are reached between the UK and Spain you will need to prove a much higher level of income to get Residency. At the moment it is under €1,000 per month but afterwards as non-EU residents it will be €2,400.

We will be keeping a close eye on post-Brexit developments and hope that it doesn't mean that a large number of Brits will be put off re-locating/retiring to Spain if it makes it financially unviable.

Hi Shirley
Good luck with your search! I’m in villamartin and my first piece of advice would be to chose your location wisely-particularly if you will not have access to a car. We don’t so have to plan shopping trips in advance as there are no buses at weekend(except July and August) and it dictates what we buy getting from bus stop to home (no ice cream unfortunately). Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions

Thanks very much Deidre, that's really helpful. To be honest we haven't been to Villamartin before so plan to pay a few visits and familiarise ourselves with the different areas - it's a huge step and we go from being excited to being scared to death!!

Very interesting and helpful Grahame, thank you.
With regard to the above post re residency Although I own an apartment in Spain, I was not planning on living out there for a couple of years. I presume you can’t apply for residency early?
Re Villamartin, Deirdre is right. Buses are pretty poor and if you don’t plan on having a car, shopping etc can be difficult (although Villamartin is lovely). You could try looking at La Zenia; Cabo Roig, Playa Flamenca where transport is not needed (I walk to the shops and beach , both less than 20 mins)
Can’t wait for my next 2 week break in April!
