Do any of you still occasionally use your ceiling fans instead of your air con?  I’m wondering if there are different benefits of each.

Ceiling fans are ok for early heat as they do not cost much to run. They move the air around and you feel cooler. Air con is needed in the hot months Like July and August.

Hi Mag

A lot depends on the orientation of your rooms. Our living room is essentially north-facing so we find that open windows and a modern ceiling fan are usually all we need in summer.

If your room gets lots of sun then you could keep your shutters closed and possibly get by with a fan (like the Spanish do), or more likely you'll need Aircon.

Fans cost peanuts even if you leave them on 24x7, Aircon is much pricier but not too bad (we use ours for heating the living room in winter and find it adds maybe €35 per month to the bill - BUT this is because we have cheap rate electricity in the hours when we use it).

Since the fan is so cheap to run, it can be beneficial to run it together with the Aircon.

Be sure to have a modern fan with plastic blades shaped like an aerofoil/wing , and a choice of speeds - they blow my wig off😂

Cheers

Steve

😂😂 Thanks.  One more question.  I know there’s a switch to make them turn right or left.  Which way is to cool the room?

We very rarely use the aircon. Ours was installed by the previous owner and in reality probably needs ripping out and replacing. However, for us it isn’t worth the expense. We use fans when very hot and at night have the windows wide open, with mosquito blinds and the ceiling fan running all night. Works fine.

When I lived here as a teenager with my parents over 50 years ago, none of us had aircon and we all survived perfectly happily!!!

We use the air con minimally as it does seem to dry your throat. Ceiling fans only circulate the air in the room so if it’s mid summer you will merely circulate warm air.

In the summer we often turn the air con on quite a cold setting for 30 minutes before bed, then shut the air con on off, and use the ceiling fans to circulate the cold air in the room created by the air con.

I concur. Exactly the best way. V
