Hi can you advise on how to acquire repeat medical prescriptions if you are registered with a G P in Spain and visiting the U K for a short time, e.g. 6 to 8 weeks. Thanks.

If you are with a public health doctor your prescription will be put onto the computer system so when you go to the Farmacia they will Swipe your SIP medical card and issue you with medication that is for that period only. The Farmacia will not issue any more quantities other than for the preset dates.

If you are with private doctors they might issue double or triple quantities.

Just to add to tebo53's great advice. The medication may be available to buy over the counter without a prescription (obviously you will pay full price for each item) therefore you could ask the pharmacist and this may avoid the added expense of a private doctor.

Hi thanks for that information, can you tell me the cost of a private doctor would be.

I take this tablet everyday and I am thinking about coming to see my grandchildren for a couple of months when they are on school holidays. Thanks so much .

I think a private consultation will be around €60 then the full cost of the meds.

John has offered advice about buying meds over the counter but if they are prescribed meds then you can't purchase OTC

We went back to UK for 2 months last year. My wife take a daily tablet which she doesn't pay for in Spain. The pharmacy in Spain wouldn't allow two months on prescription but, as they were on prescription, allowed us to buy another month's worth OTC. Cost for her particular one was 23 euro.

Solved the problem with no private doctor getting involved.

Quite a few things stating prescription medication are available OTC in Spain including BP tablets, PPI, inhalers etc.

Just for information purposes. I take two tables daily,  one for hypertension the other for cholesterol, although they are prescribed by my doctor they are also freely available to buy over the counter. The cost is minimal without prescriptiion, Simvastin 28 tablets 95c and Enalapril 10 tablets 53c. With prescription I pay 10% of these costs.

Before anything else go to the chemist and explain what you want.

Cheers, J
