We have bought an apartment in Algorfa and the apartment block has a president and annual meetings - as we are only using the property part time we can’t attend the meetings - do people find these types of meetings useful and important?

If you can attend the AGM's they can be very informative. The alternative to not attending is to give your vote via proxy to someone who will vote on your behalf.

If you do go down the proxy vote route I would advise that you give your vote to someone you can trust to vote as you have instructed. You will need to give your voting  instructions for each item on the agenda.

If you can then try and schedule your visit to attend the AGM. You’ll get a copy of the accounts and the agenda in advance . You will get to know all the problems affecting your community, however big or small and it also gives you the chance to have some input as to what happens in your little community. It’s also handy to know if you have a willing president , as some communities have to annually pick names out of a hat. It you don’t attend it could come as a bit of a shock to find that even in your absence you’re the president for the following year.

So I would always advise attending all AGMs but especially your first one.

Some of the larger and newer communities have a zoom  meeting set up for those who can’t attend in person
