If you are a UK passport holder and want to live in Benidorm permanently you need a visa from the Spanish consulate in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. You will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements.

If you  want to work anywhere in Spain you will need to secure a position first and then your prospective employer will need to apply for a work visa on your behalf.

All jobs in Spain must be offered to an EU citizen first.

If you want to retire to Spain then you can apply for a non lucrative visa. You will need to prove that you have an income of around €28,000 per annum and full private healthcare.

If you have a EU or Irish Passport the that is another explanation.

Thank you for your help. Do you know if there is much building work out there for the English at all?

There could be some jobs on offer from the smaller English building companies, there are several in the Benidorm area but they are required by law to offer any positions to EU citizens.

At the moment around Benidorm there are several hotels/bars/clubs/restaurants being refurbished.

A friend of mine has a building company but the majority of his work is replacing kitchens and bathrooms.

Swimmer57 has answered your question absolutely.
All jobs have to be offered to EU citizens. Only if the employer can prove to the authorities that nobody in the whole of the EU could possibly do the job would your employment be allowed. Unemployment is high and this area is awash with builders with the necessary documents to start work immediately. No legal employer, (and they would have to be legal to get the visa) would put themselves through all that effort when there are plenty here already.
If you have an Irish or other EU passport you could come over and set yourself up but Brexit has changed all that.
If you came over looking to work cash in hand you would basically have to stay here because if you overstayed the 90 days allowed you would be caught at the border as an overstayer and the longer you have been here the bigger the fine could be and the longer you could be banned from all Schengen countries.
