Hi. I am thinking of moving over to Benidorm in the near future.  I have a good friend who is Spanish we have been friends for about 15 years, he had asked me to move to Spain as he knows that it is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I will be looking for part time work when I move there. What do I need to do as regards to legally living in Spain.

Thankyou

If you scroll down towards the bottom of this page or the home page of the Benidorm forum you will find "Jim's guides"

Within the guides you will find sections of everything you need to know about legally living in Spain such as acquiring your NIE number and healthcare etc.

At the moment you are within your rights to free movement to just come and live here but within the first 90 days of living in Spain you are required to sign the foreigners register and obtain an NIE number. You will need to prove you have healthcare for yourself and any dependants plus enough income so not to become a burden on the state.

After 183 days you will automatically become a tax resident and be expected to pay taxes to the Spanish government. You will need to submit form Modelo 720 on which you declare all your worldwide income and amounts in your bank accounts and any other income such as any rental income from property in the UK or other countries.

After Brexit requirements may differ as yet no-one knows.

Benidorm is a fantastic place to be on holiday or living here but there are very few jobs that become available especially part time. There are lists of people looking for bar work, maintenance or cleaning etc and any jobs that become available are usually given to people who they know or to family members. At this time of year there are hundreds of people being made redundant and are out of work until possibly next march when the holiday season starts again. There are many requests for work on caravan parks but none seems to come to fruition.

What work would you be looking for and can you speak any Spanish?

Apartments are getting rare and expensive and you need to be available to view and put a deposit down on the same day otherwise it will be gone. 1 bedroom apartments are about €450 per calendar month plus electric etc, 2 bedroom apartment would be around €500 upwards.

Hope that gives you a bit of an insight into the legalities of living in Spain and to get settled.

Keep posting on this site if you need to know more.
