Hi everyone, my husband and I are moving over to Spain at the end of September and we are bringing our black Labrador Sacha with us.  I'm a little worried as to how to protect her paws from burning on the hot ground. Her paws are quite sensitive as she suffers with allergies and can make her paws sore by licking them. I have toyed with the idea of getting her some dog boots but not sure how affective these would be.  I would be very grateful for any advice.

Thankyou in advance

I have had experience with working dogs wearing protective boots. They had to have them due to the potentially dangerous environment.

In your case I wouldn't recommend them. I suggest that you follow the 10 second rule with the palms of your hands on the pavement, that's what I do with my dog. If the ground is hot then so too is the air and there is little benefit in exercising a dog in those conditions.

I really hope they are joking! My dogs now deceased of all age 14 yrs(last called Sasha! GSD) would run in heat to find the coolest shade.  Why? 'cause they know when it's hot underfoot. Villas

Great post Ray,  so many muppets walk the dogs when it is too hot and bear in mind if one surface is not to hot then another color one maybe so walk very early in the morning really common seance should prevail!  When it is very hot the dogs are not that bothered about going far just like us.

RayD (careful where you put your hands!)

As a dog owner, (hopefully with common sense, some not all!) learn one´s dog. Just like a child equal, but they are not the same.

Jackets in winters!, Ice pack jackets in summer?. Dogs in prams, (accept an infirm animal out for the fresh air. Yes).

Nature (for many centuries before humans shed it´s fur), many breeds molt in summer, and grew hair in winter. All dogs shed (except hairless, duh!), but the amount of hair shedding depends on factors such as hormones, environment, health and breed genetics. A dog's coat protects the skin and controls body temperature. Besides its tongue & its pads. (sweat glands). When a dog´s coat is wet; (water) gets through to the skin by hairs naturally coated in oil. So don´t shampoo! Our man´s best friend from sub-zero degrees to a hottest day will cope quite adequately & quite capable of looking for shade & where the “hot-spots” are.

The worst: Dogs chained up. Dogs locked in a hot car. or even confined in the shade. That´s one´s sad dog. Attention to learn how to “talk” & enjoy your walks, they´re quite intelligent!.
