I have lost count of the number of bad reviews about Goldcar, when renting the host sometimes warns about this company in its information pack. The best company I have come across in Alicante is Lara who include insurance with no excess so you do not need to take out separate excess cover. Not relevant for this group but my recommendations for other areas are Autoreisen for The Canaries and Cargest for Malaga.

DOYOUSPAIN are excellent.  They are just a comparison site. I agree Goldcar are terrible.  Car hire has increased dramatically post covid, ten fold out if season. There's a lack of supply hence price goes up

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

I've used Coys many times as well without fault. I'd recommend getting in touch with them and if they don't have anything available for the particular time required ask them to put you on the reserve list in case they have a cancellation. Not guaranteed to happen but worth a try. Same suggestion for Lara's as well.

Good luck!

Hi, I have always used Doyouspain, they are ok as a broker and also offer excess ins at alot lower price then the hire companies. I however have bought a yearly excess ins from World Wide ins and this is even cheaper and do pay out if you need them to.  The problem is always with the hire co...

...mpanies and I have found Goldcar to be the worst of a bad lot. You have to stand your ground and state have excess ins. If they said do not know of Doyouspain then they are lying but it is very tough while at the counter and see everytime people collapsing and then paying what is asked of them.

My daugh was taken in by Goldcar 2 years ago. She had done all that I told her to do but got to Goldcar and they kept saying her credit card was not working and we know this was a lie. She was so stressed she paid again.

This is when decided to buy our own car in Spain and park it at Alicante Airport. Best decision we ever made.

Hi Moira. Good idea about purchasing your own car. Did you have to register it at a Spanish address and how do you get on doing the yearly MOT (ITV). Also do you have UK insurance or Spanish Thanks

Well it was all very easy. We purchased car via Automart in Benissa and they put us in touch with insurance, reasonable cost and you pay ins on the car not the person and anyone over 25 can then drive the car. You have to get it MOT'd at a MOT garage which I understand there is one in Benidorm but all over Spain and is every 2 yrs until car is 10 years old and thereafter done yrly. You have to set up taxing car via direct debit. Automart register your car using our Spanish holiday home.

Hope this is clear enough.
