Hi, does anyone know how long the lawyer holds back a certain amount of money when you’ve sold a property? We sold ours in April and she said we won’t get our €700 back until the SUMA is due in September. I know they hold money back to make sure all bills are paid, but this seems like a long time.

Thanks

I agree they have had time to pay all due bills now and return the balance

Last time i had dealings with selling i kept on emailing/texting the buyers solicitor

Eventually i received full payment ???

keep contacting or even visit their office

good luck

I take it you're non resident.

Bills include non resident tax and there have been multiple reports of people having to wait years for the money back.

It may be more realistic to think Sept 2023 than 2022!

Hi, yes it’s a holiday home. Everything is up to date regarding all our bills, but she mentioned something about waiting until September because of SUMA? Let’s see. 🤞

The Property Tax (paid to SUMA) is not payable until around September and is payable by whoever owns the property on the 1st January in the same year so that may be why you are being advised of such a wait.

When we sold our rental property we had to wait almost two years before we got our money back, and that was after repeated phone calls and emails to our lawyer.

Thanks. We sold the property at the end of March 2022 so does that’s probably why they’re holding onto the money until September.

Hi Kaz

When we bought our property we knew that our solicitor held money back from us in order to pay the SUMA costs relating to the previous owners.  I presume this would have taken longer had we not scanned a SUMA request for the previous owners and emailed it to our solicitors. Once our solicitor had the information from the SUMA request, all went through smoothly. Maybe this process does take a long time if you are not informed in a timely manner of the SUMA invoice.

Would it be possible for you to contact the SUMA office to give them the details they require to ensure you receive the SUMA invoice in a timely manner?  Then, once you receive this, you can pass it onto your solicitor? It's only a suggestion from me, not a proven resolution

Thank you. It’s definitely worth a try.
