Has anyone successfully got direct debits for utilities paid via wise and cancelled bank account. Fed up with paying such high fees as a non resident . Thanks

I pay all my direct debits with my wise. Some take a little more work than others but worth persevering to save on the bank charges!

Yes, had them up and running with Wise for almost 2 years now, no problems.

Also on my last visit to Spain I finally got to close my awful Caixa account.

Yes, all utilities are on direct debit, the only one which was initially a problem was the community fees, the admin said that they couldn't make it work but more recently they have done so.

I actually personally visited the utilities in my area to give them my Wise IBAN number but plenty of people on the forum have managed this from the UK by email or within their utilities online account.

I have been trying to close my account at Caixa La Zenia for almost 2 years but due to the pandemic couldn't get to the branch, I emailed them stating that at the time travel was illegal and would they make allowance for that and close my account, no chance they said, attend in person or give someone Power of Attorney.

I emptied the account of all cash but the charges continued to build in the background, when I finally got to the branch these charges were app €300 and expected to have to pay this, to my amazement it was waived due to the pandemic.

In an email the branch said I didn't need an appointment to close an account, when I actually did this they gave me an appointment to come back later, if I was you I would get the ball rolling early on in your stay just in case there are issues.
