Does anyone have experience of using a private post box in this area? Mail sent from the UK by friends or family to us in Cabo Roig rarely arrives. Wondering if it was sent to a private post box would help, or make little difference? TIA.

Definitely the best way to go unless you intend to queue at the Correos! Try the Dog & Bone at La Zenia. They use the Correos at San Pedro del Pinatar who don't seem to have any of the problems experienced in your area.
