Could anyone clarify if victims of the recent floods can claim compensation from all of the various funds available. It would appear to me to be "double dipping".

Hi Martin,

Because the Spanish government declared the floods a "natural disaster", everyone who has paid for relevant insurance is covered by the Government insurance consortium.

Separately, the Regional governments covering the affected areas, e.g. Valencia, are making emergency funds available, up to a maximum of €4,500.  These funds are coming from the EU and are means-tested with, for example, the maximum amount being available to only those who have suffered total loss.  When the European Commission's vice-president, Frans Timmermans, visited Orihuela last month, he said he would make sure that funds "arrive quickly" to the Vega Baja area, but I haven't heard of anyone being paid yet.

It occurs to me that, if we've paid for and are covered by insurance, we may not meet the requirements of means-testing for the emergency fund.  I've assumed that I wouldn't qualify, but I guess the only way to be sure, is to apply at your Town Hall and see what they say.

Kind regards,

Kim
