Erm, you're not really understanding how exchange rates work, are you? Just because a certain currency is worth more than another one does not make it "stronger". The pound has "weakened" by 20% against the euro since just 2016 and by 20% against the USD in just 6 months from the beginning of 201...

...6 to the middle of 2016 and now even lower.

Now, i don't agree we should have adopted the euro but, if we had when you bought your property, you would now be getting that 1.54 for all the notional pounds you had.

For example, if you have a pension from UK now of, say, 1000 pounds a month you will be getting 1,170 euro. If it had changed when you bought your property you would now be getting 1,540 euro. See how a "weakening" pound would have affected that?

And when the exchange rate dropped to 1.03 you would be getting considerably less and even less if it was parity on exchange rates. Thank for your analogy but I fully understand how an exchange rate works and how a low exchange rate will dramatically effect the money you actually get. If ot was parity at £1000 it would de 1000E at 1.17 (todays rate) you will be getting 1170E. Somehow you don't think that makes your pound stronger 🤷🏼‍♂️. Maybe ask someone drawing their pension if they (or you) would prefer 1000E or the additional 170E due to the exchange rate. We would all love parity or less when exchanging back from euros to pounds but we can't have it all.

Thank you for proving my point,

When the pound was strong you got less. When the pound weakens you get more. Is it really that difficult to understand?

So when the pound 'rallies' against the euro (according to the financial institutions) and the exchange rate increase, you are saying that that is a weaker pound? If your pound can buy more euros, that's a weaker pound than the euro? If I can get 1.03 euros for my pound at an exchange rate of 1.03 and 20 years ago I could get 1.54 euros for my pound you are saying the pound was weaker than the euro then? If the pound is weaker and therefore worth less on the exchange market the exchange rate drops.

Just because you get a few extra cents for the pound? That does not make it stronger at all. Like saying the pound was stronger than the Deutsche mark when you got 3 marks to the pound even though it was 10 marks to the pound some years earlier.

Or the pound is stronger than the USD as you get 20 cents or more for the pound when it was 4 dollars to the pound when I was a lad....

...

Not really understanding how you are saying the pound is stronger than the euro just because of that.

Well attended moment the pound  to euro rate is 1.16. Do more euros for your pound.

The pound is autonomous, the whole of Europe is also up to its neck in inflation abd the European banks are laden with bad debt. Nobody is winning but simple maths 1.16 euros to  the pound make the pound a stronger currency.

This has always been the rule when applying even before Brexit .I had to rent a flat for the 90 days in Essex then return to Spain to collect my Residencia. Good luck.
