I am hoping to move to El Campello next year, even though I have retired I would like to work, my background is property so I would be very grateful if anyone could give me some advice on how to go about getting a job.

My Spanish is very poor but I am going to be taking lessons soon so hopefully by the time I move out there I will have more knowledge.

Thank you in advance

Until you have a least a ‘working’ knowledge of Spanish, it is highly unlikely that you will find very much in the way of work. Of course most of the estate agents, especially in Costa Blanca South, speak English, but you would need Spanish also. The likelihood of being offered a job complete with a contract etc is remote, as many agents, I believe, either offer a minimal wage plus commission, or are entirely commission based, which would mean you needing to register as ‘autonomo’ to be legal.

Thank you for your reply, I thought it might be difficult.  I think I will have to look at another type of employment.

Most ‘work’ goes to local Spanish people, there is still a huge unemployment situation here and unless you have some very special skill, unavailable here, to offer, the n most available work is likely to be low paid bar/waitress/washer upper, much of which is seasonal. There  are some British companies around, but mainly in construction and related services, .

Thank you, it seems that I will have to just save up a bit more before I move, I do have my pension but I would like to top it up.  I also thought that if I was working it would be easier to meet people and make friends.  Do you know if there is a Lions International club nearby, I belong to one now and it would be good to join one when I moce

I am not certain if there is a Lion’s Club, but you could always look it up, most organisations have branches here; have just looked in the local expat paper under El Campbell’s, no, it doesn’t seem t but there is a British Legion and  something calling itself The International Club. I am afraid that most people of our age here are either financially independent, many like yourself and us, on basic pensions with perhaps a little more, or many started businesses many years ago. The other thing to consider is whether you will need health insurance; if you are officially in receipt of a UK pension, then you are entitled to the Spanish health care system, once you have jumped through the various hoops. You need to get form S1 from Newcastle. There are loads of charities and social groups, especially in the sort of area you are looking at if you are looking to meet friends.

Thank you so much you have been most helpful,  I have been looking online for information on what I need but you have told me something that I hadn’t found out yet, before next year I will have to do a bit more research.

Thank you again
