Hi all and thank you for any help/advice in anticipation.

We arranged our TIEs back in 2020 through an agency and had to take out a DKV insurance policy (with existing health issues not covered) because we are both in our early 60's. In March this year my partner was diagnosed with oral cancer and we received excellent service through Clinica Benidorm who liasied direct with DKV for appropriate payments. I understand from reading reviews on ex pat forums that many are unhappy with DKV.  Our renewal is now due for the next year and my question is - will my partner be covered for oral cancer as treatment is still on going,  or could it be seen as a pre existing condition as we go into the new year of cover and therefore no further cover for oral cancer.  I have tried to no avail to understand the terms and conditions but all paperwork with DKV is in Spanish and complicated.

Many thanks

Dave

PHI for residency is supposed to be full and without exclusions or co-payments but in 2020 checks were not as strict as they are now.

As you've completed your first year you should now be elligible to apply for Convenio Especial which at age up to 65 cost's €60/mth and €157/mth thereafter. That will give you State care the same as Spanish nationals enjoy however without access to subsidised or free medicines but you don't get those with you PHI either.

As you already have a relationship with DKV it's not a new policy or, in my opinion, shouldn't be treated as one.

If you changed provider it would be considered a pre existing condition.

My advice is not to let the policy lapse but hopefully someone else with more knowledge of the insurance industry will chip in.

I hope everything works out for you both :)

*edit*

As the poster above says you can now apply for the convenio especial, we completed our forms yesterday and will send off the apps on Monday. We will be keeping our PHI for another year given most European public health providers will still have significant backlogs due to Covid.

Hi Dave,

Another of our members, Kelvin1960, has experience of DKV in a similar situation and always speaks highly of their service.  If he sees your post, I'm sure he'll respond; alternatively, you could private message him with a note of your concerns.

Kind regards,

Kim

All DKV paperwork is available in English translation. We investigated it ourselves a year or so ago and I found it available on their website quite easily.
