Next week I will be in Spain and will pay a well respected local business for work at our holiday home with a Wise card.

The business owner informs me that if he is paid by a Spanish bank card then he incurs no charges, however, if the card is an international one such as Wise or Revolut then the business owner is charged 2% by his bank which he is then obliged to pass on to the customer, has anyone come across this before ??

I have checked with Wise themselves and it isn't at their end.

Hi Bibba

Thanks for the info but my question wasn't about a transfer but a straight card payment.

Although I do take your point that Spanish banks will charge for many things.

Paying in Euros with a Wise card is no different to paying with a Spanish bank card, or from ay other Euro source, i.e, the recipient will get exactly what you send them.

Your local business has it's knickers in a twist!

Darro I totally agree with you but he is going to show me the accounts and the difference between a Spanish card payment and a Wise card payment.

But the point of my question is has anyone else come across this ?

I was reading through some of the fee charging structures for a Sabadell business account a few days back and while the %ages aren't necessarily aligned with what you are likely to experience, there were different % charges depending on the bank of the payee even if in the EU.

I imagine a similar situation applies in Spain as in most other countries; if you make your charges clear and transparent then you can charge what you want.

Some of the fees I see in other countries (not just Spain or the UK) are on a par and simply accepted as part of the normal course of business.

No not credit card, I would expect a charge with that, or bank transfers. A straight  forward Debit card payment.

I think that George is on the right track here.

Just a note for you,N26 ,if you have a Spanish address, will issue the bank account with a Spanish IBAN,although it is not necessary if your bank is in the EU,it is actually illegal for businesses not to accept a EU bank card ,plus again ,if you have Revolut with a Spanish address, this will automatically change to a Spanish IBAN in two months time.

If any merchant or business takes a payment by card then he is charged a processing fee. Whether he passes this cost on is up to himself.

Cash is king.

This is why EU and others are now pushing ahead with trying to outlaw cash payments of over €1000, not for terrorism concerns as stated, but just another way to get more money off you and into the hands of big banking cartels.
