I was once called out to a property in Sta Ponsa when I worked in Mallorca. The man had no electric . I found 2 other apartments conected to his meter that I disconected. There was so much power being used the main fuse had blown.

We originally intended buying but decided that at our age it made more sense to rent, lots of factors involved but think its best for us.

Hi, has anyone rented a caravan in Spain for a few months, we are considering this option while we look for a property as our permanent residence with our 2 dogs. I believe you have to leave the country after 90 days if you don't have residencia, how long do you have to leave the country before you are allowed back, ie could you pop over to Portugal for 24 hours. thanks Jill & Chris

If you are a UK resident then after the end of transition you will only be allowed a total of 90 days in any 180 days in the whole of the Schengen area.  You will also not have your pet passports anymore for the dogs so will need to have vet certificates and that takes a lot of time to sort out (several months).

The rules are clear, if you want to stay in Spain more than 90 days then you will need to apply for permanent residence (now TIE for Brits).  You will no longer be able to spend 90 days in Spain, go somewhere else for a few days and go back to Spain because that would still take you over the allowance of 90 days in any 180.

However, if you are coming to Spain to look for your permanent residence then that would be different because you are relocating.  You could rent a property and apply for your TIE while renting.  You would need a proper residential address and a recognised Spanish rental contract for the TIE application, so a caravan may not be an option.  Once your application has been filed (do as soon as you can after arrival, within the first month), you can stay while the application is processed so would not have to worry about the 90 day rule.  With brexit transition ending almost certainly on 31st December, Brits will have to fulfill the much harder criteria of third country nationals rather than the current easier EU nationals' criteria.

Hello cazxx1,

My neighbor sells the 4 bedroom house in Orihuela Costa Vista Azul 12 neighborhood. The houses are built in 2007 and are like new. The price is 185,000 Euros, it has 4 bedrooms. If you want more details I can give you his address and phone number directly, but he only speaks Spanish.

All great advice on here and I absolutely agree, if you are unsure, wait and try first.  Its a big investment for you to be unhappy about.  That said, my Mother had an apartment in La Florida for 20 years and she had the best time in her retirement, it was her holiday home and she and her friends loved.  So did we!!  She sold it and made a healthy profit and I decided to buy and in February got the keys to my house not far from La Florida.  I used A Place in the Sun (even for transferring money) they were very good and got to know me and what I liked.  While my Mum had her property I did a few trips to specifically look for what I wanted and got a great house at a great price.  I can recommend my solicitor if you like as she has served us well for 20 years.  Be happy and take your time.
