We are looking at a property in La Mata with a view to purchasing... Not planning on being resident, but making frequent visits throughout the year and maybe using our full 180 days allocation..... I  would be interested if anyone could give some 'pro's & cons' about the area for a retired couple?       Thanks in advance...... Bob

Hello

 Bob

Instead of asking for pros & cons, which will differ from person to person, tell us what you are looking for from a holiday home in La Mata.....Ive lived here as a retiree since 2003?

Cheers

El makes a good suggestion. Maybe also indícate when you’re planning to spend time here. Winter is totally different from summer.

I’ve had a holiday home in La Mata for 5 years and visit throughout the year.  It’s very different in summer and winter.  In summer it’s packed with mainly Spanish holidaymakers and difficult to park near the beach.  But the chiringuitos (beach bars) and some of the restaurants are only open Easter to end September and in winter it’s much quieter.  There is  plenty of walking along the beach boardwalks and in the nature reserve around the salt lake.  There are a couple of English bars open throughout the year and if you don’t want to drive  La Mata has a great bus service with local buses into busier Torreviega to connect with buses and coaches across Spain.  The IMF cinema near the Habaneras shopping centre generally shows a film in English each week.

In winter it is often warm enough to eat outside during the day but it does get chilly when the sun goes down so you will need some form of heating.   It’s a great place but it’s not a party town.  It’s still very Spanish and has its own weekly market.  South of Torrevieja (Cabo Roig, La Zenia etc ) probably have bigger expat communities and more lively entertainment.  It depends really what you are looking for.

Thanks for that CP. Some very useful information there. 👍
