Since purchasing our property 3 years ago our holiday home has been insured by Mapfre under a policy set up by our lawyers.  I have  never received a copy of the policy .  Alerted by other posts on this forum I now urgently need to check how many days we are insured for when the property is empty. Due to the pandemic the house has so far been empty since end September and I have no idea when we can return.

The policy is up for renewal on Saturday 13th March so time is of the essence but I have searched in vain for a means of contacting Mapfre.  The only contact number on the renewal notice is a recorded Spanish message and I can find nothing online.
I have asked our lawyers for advice but so far have had no response.

Does anyone have any contact details for Mapfre please?

Hi Cp,

If you go onto mapfre.es and click on the home insurance icon, it gives a few different contact options. Might be worth a try.

Just looked back at my original emails when I took out my policy in 2017.

Worth a try:

Thanks. Unfortunately the tel number is the same as on my renewal notice and is just a prerecorded Spanish message ( which I’m afraid I don’t understand).

I can’t imagine I am covered for the 5 months and counting that the house has been empty so far.  It must be a major issue for a lot of us holiday home owners.

I thought there was a live chat option - not sure how accessible it is. I just renewed my insurance yesterday - I’m in the same position as you, but didn’t even think of the issue you’re dealing with!

I’m afraid you might be too late this term as I think they need a months notice if ending the policy. The law favours the companies

I still need to contact Mapfre to find out how long a period I am covered for whilst  the  house is currently empty for such an extended period.

I do not have contact details for Mapfre and however I am not sure if they actually enforce the 1 month rule, I know Liberty do not.

We are with them almost 3 years also and would’ve terminated the policy if we were able to travel over at the time of renewal last year. Not having had a policy abroad with any other company I cannot say if the terms are the same but Mapfre seem to have limitations on seasonal homes but I can’t see on their home policy pdf where it says how long each year the property must be occupied for or how often it must be checked. I’d also be worried about the timeframe if a claim was set in motion. It’d be hard to say when damage or a break-in might have occurred. In the case of the recent flooding should damage occur and we were only to find out in a few months time I’d say it’s be very hard to get anywhere with them then. This is all I can see on their seasonal home portion

“ “ CLAUSE MH-05. SEASONAL OR SECOND HOMES

It is hereby agreed that the General Conditions of the insurance shall be changed as follows:

During the period in which the dwelling is vacant, the following assets and coverage shall be excluded:

• Items and furnishings located on terraces, porches and gardens.

• Theft of insured assets from inside the dwelling.

• The maximum responsibility assumed by the Company in the event of robbery shall be EUR 3000 per object, unless the provisions of the General Conditions provide for a lower limit” “
