Nice one to brighten up the day Linds, and you've got them where the date-loving tree rats can't get at them.

Incidentally, dates freeze well.

I normally freeze them when they're still yellow (those that I don't eat first). Last time I hung them up to darken and develop sweetness, the autumn was quite wet and humid, and some of them went mouldy.

On the topic of yellow ones:

If you freeze them when they're yellow and leave for a little while, they still go brown but don't develop as much sweetness - good for a diabetic like myself. I first wash them and remove the stones. I always have enough in the freezer to give me a year's worth of sticky toffee pudding and date & walnut cake.

Unfortunately my Spanish friend has moved houses and no longer has a date palm, so next year I'll have to do what Margaret calls 'rural shopping'.

All your advice is duly noted!! must say i need the sweetness for the Lamb Tagine  i make in my Moroccan tagine!   Good luck with the Rural shopping lol.... we have thought about this when we are out on our bikes but our neighbour kindly let us pick one of his trees cos we let him pick one of our Olive trees as we don't need the extra oil.. a fare trade off... everyone is happy...
