Having spent the last few days holidaying in the La Siesta / El Chaparral area, we have noticed the problem of dogs fowling the roads and pavements to a great extent. We are looking to purchase a property in the not so distant future here and this is a concern for us as it makes the area look dirty and unhygienic. Does the local council / Mayor have rules against this? What if anything is being done about it? When we stayed in Gran Alacant urbanisation during the summer they have specific dog parks where owners take their pet and this is rectified this way. I look forward to hearing your comments.

Thanks Jill

Instead of having a go at retired Brits maybe you should educate the Spanish people who do not understand the concept of picking up their dogs waste. You cannot generalise to the extent that you do, there are irresponsible dog owners of all nationalities.

I was not jumping down your throat, I was writing of my experience in Spain, not restricting my comment to one particular area.

I dont think the problem is just in the area you spoke about as I find the problem terrible in Torrevieja. We have been going there for the last 15 years and it is disgusting walking up the streets and it is such a shame

I agree.  It is a wide spread problem.  Where I live is 95% Spanish and they rarely clear up after their dogs. I think the problem is exacerbated by the infrequency of rain to wash it away.

I too live amongst mostly Spanish locals. I see most of them during the daytime, cleaning up & spraying their bottle cleaners on the urine. The problem seems to appear miraculously during the night. No see....No clean!      V

I have literally just watched a French lady take her dog from the restaurant where we are sitting, take her dog across the road and let it do it’s business in a grass verge, while we were watching her! I waited to see if she would clear up the mess - she made no attempt, just came and sat back down again! I’m not saying it’s a particular nationality, it’s just hygiene and care about the area you live. It’s an environmental pollutant, and human health hazard, dog faeces carries harmful bacteria and parasites. I have a dog in the UK and wouldn’t dream of not clearing his mess up.  If we did move here, signs would be up and a campaign started. Just going over to speak to the lady now! Wish me luck 🤞

Lazy dirty dog owners are a problem all over Spain-and not just some visitors

Education is the way forward and to a degree name and shame

I wonder how many fines have actually been imposed

It would seem that some dog walkers feel it’s repulsive or beneath them to clean up after a pet ...😡crazy!

I agree that carrying  poo bags and offering them to dog owners might prompt a positive change in behaviour but I suspect you’d need to do a night patrol to be of any use !

In the Uk some councils place free poo bags at the entrance to parks and popular walking routes and designated waste bins ,,,prompting positive change takes time

Maybe some energetic expats could lead the way and initiate change

Good luck on your move to Spain
