The link dropped off for some reason. It was the news item from the BBC.

Since then other people have posted it anyway,

I think this is the procedure flow chart that the Ministry Of Interior have given to the Police for people suspected of illegally occupying a property

Ministerio del Interior okupas - Twitter Search / Twitter

I don't understand Spanish so tried translating it via Google

----------------------------------------

Basically they decide if the property being occupied illegally is a dwelling (ie. permanent resident or second home unoccupied or rented)

If yes

Crime of Breaking and Entering (articles 202 and 203)

Action

If perpetrators were caught red-handed and won't open the door

Arrest the perpetrators

Take evidence (videos and photos of the scene especially the doors and locks)

Check if any owners belongings are missing

Restore property ownership back to owners

------------------

Note the above bolded part which makes the law useless to most of us (especially if they have occupied our property by stealth without any witnesses present). This makes it easy for the police to say you must go through the courts.

If I've deciphered this process relatively accurately then its insane!!!

Is the squatter problem really bad ? We are intending buying a property in either La Zenia, Playa Flamenca or Villamartin but reading some the problems getting rid of squatters kind of puts me off

I put this on another conversation regarding squatters - Was speaking to someone who could not use their apartment for 2 years when squatters took over the apartment below. After 2 years and getting nowhere with useless Spanish lawyers, the community paid the squatters 4000 euro's to leave. I myself would take the law into my own hands, as i do in the UK with tenants. If this is not an option, i would pay people to get rid as per the BBC links already posted. The squatters and Lawyers would not get a penny. They are both profiting from this ridiculous situation.

Perhaps read the attached article before making your decision. We have owned a property in Spain for over 4 years, we have not had any issues in our community. I was not aware of the squatter situation before we bought, if I had we might not have bought in Spain.

Try some of the local biker clubs , most are up for a little "entertainment " on a weekend ...!!!

Not legal of course but neither are the scumbags in your property ....!!!

Now that is rather a slur on the local bikers!

When I was in our bikers club in the UK (for 8 years) the group, Eagles MCC, consisted of engineers, 2 policemen, a solicitor, milkman, office workers etc. All law abiding citizens!! You would need to pay any Hells Angel type a lot of money to "employ" them. I imagine that the local Spanish biker groups are of a similar make up.
