A Contract clearly stating what work is to be done in valuable in case things go wrong. Beware of builders who ask for substantial payments in advance using the excuse that they need it for materials. Either pay the supplier directly and get proper receipts or enquire why the builder does not have a credit account with suppliers. When you are satisfied with the work being carried out you can pay in instalments but always get clear detailed receipts for what has been done and been paid for.
Try and get recommendations from trusted friends or neighbours as I have seen on the Forum people recommending builders who with a bit of research turn out to be connected to the builder they are recommending.
Across the Costas there are hundreds of people who advertise that they can carryout a variety of jobs but they have no qualifications ( particularly dangerous with gas or electrics ) and no real expertise or skill but get by with what turns out to be shoddy workmanship. Generally the best advice is BEWARE OF COWBOYS.
