Hi does anybody know if I can apply for residency at the town hall in la zenia. I currently live in the UK but I bought a property in villamartin in 2006. I have an nie number and spanish bank account and I had a padron that has recently expired. I also have taken out a healthcare plan with no Co payments and I have approx 8000 euros in my bank which I can increase if necessary

Hi Paul,

It sounds as though you meet all the requirements - you can check against Jim's guide:

Jim's guide - The Residency certificate - Part 1 - Theory

but you can't apply at a Town Hall, you need to make an appointment at a National Police Station or Extranjeros (Foreigners) office.  Before the Covid-19 lockdown, all residency applications for UK citizens were being processed only at Alicante, but I remember Jim saying, not that long ago, that some of the other National Police stations, e.g. Orihuela, are also processing applications, but you have to call in to make an appointment, rather than doing it online.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks very much Kim you have confirmed what I was thinking. I am hoping to come over in July for a couple of weeks,  if the Spanish will let me in, so hopefully I can arrange an appointment in Alicante. I will need to renew my padron though which I understand I can do at la zenia town hall. I presume the townhall is all up and running?

Hi Paul,

Yes, you can renew the padron at your Town Hall.  Ours had been closed, but it's now open by appointment.  By the time you come over in July, we should be into the "new normal", but probably best to check specific arrangements with your own Ayuntamiento.

Kind regards,

Kim

When you say "as well" when referring to tax position you don't mean I'll be paying in Spain as well as the UK do you?

Not wanting to be provocative, really just asking.....I thought you could only be “on” the padron if you were resident in Spain?🤪🥂

Only people applying for Residencia should be registering on to the Padron.  The problem is that some town halls have actively encouraged non-residents, who have no intention of becoming resident, to register so that the town hall can obtain additional funding per capita from Central government.
