We are considering buying a property in La Zenia as we have just sold our property in Portugal where someone had to keep a key for the electricity company, is this also the case in Spain.  Also how do you go about opening a bank account in Spain.

Is there a lot of crime in the area as I was told that as it is close to Torreveija, there is a lot of crime in the area, does this include burglaries.

We have an apartment in La Zenia which is a great location.

No one has a key for our property other than ourselves, water and electric companies read the meters on the street.

We would give a high recommendation to Sabadell Bank, they have branches and ATM's at the end of Cabo Roig Strip and at Los Dolses on the way up to Zenia Boulevard. They are an excellent Bank, easy to set up your account. You will probably require your passport and NIE number. If you are buying your solicitor should help set up the account and the direct debits for your utility bills. Once opened then register to use their Online facility which will enable you to carry out transactions even when back in the U.K.

There is crime to be found anywhere but the La Zenia area is a great location and in eighteen months in the area we have no direct knowledge of burglaries.

There is no more crime in my opinion than anywhere else. Just be alert and as you would at home keep doors closed. Dont carry too much cash etc

Opening a bank account is simple. Take id. Complete forms in bank. Done.

Hope you find somewhere

I have got my property close to la Zamia, I find it  peaceful, There is hardly any crime to my knowledge.

Opening account is very easy as long as you carry right documents. However there are charges to have account in spain for non residents.

Good luck 👍🏻

Have to say, we love la zenia, however, in less than 12 months, we had our hire car broken into last year....and in the last week we had someone scale and climb over our balcony during the night ( fortunately our security is tight and they left empty handed) and then today....our hire car was keyed!!  I am beginning to re think.

Hi Carol,

Sometimes the bank allows you to open a bank account with only a passport. But it is unusual.

In fact, you need a NIE-number (a Spanish fiscal number). Any owner of a property or a car or a bank account in Spain needs this number.

I live and work in Campoamor, very close to La Zenia. And I would be able to help you to apply for the NIE-number at Playa Plamenca Town Hall. In the summer time it is a bit trickier than usual. But you can still do it also in the summer.

There is a high crime rate present in this region, mainly -  burglaries and thefts of luggage when arriving at your residence from the airport with a rented car for example.

Going to discos late at night can also be really dangerous, because of all the traffic with drugs going on around here. But if you are careful, nothing will happen to you.

Yet, still this is a really nice place to live in ! La Zenia is a good choice.

Kind regards,
