Can anyone recommend: Builder/tiller/painter

I'm not so much looking for a builder as asking do other people think it is extremely expensive to get any work done in the area I have been quoted crazy prices for jobs like painting tiling etc. Now I'm Irish and it's not cheap to get work done at home but in La Zenia I feel that the workmen think we're new to the area and they load it on?I would love to hear of other people's experiences.The materials are no more expensive here, and the wages are less so why do I get asked for twice the rate as at home?
