Loving our new house in La Zenia but the 1980s floor tiles have got to go? Approximately 40 square metres on the ground floor and stairs (upstairs to be done at a later date!).  Have had quotes ranging from sticking on top (a definite no no!) and ridiculously expensive.  Any suggestions gratefully received.  We just want something light coloured and plain and are not in a desperate rush.

If the existing tiles are solid then you could tile on top!  The problem in Spain is when you take the tiles up they usually only have a thin screed so the whole lot comes up and you need to re screed and level before you can re lay the tiles, we had this in two houses we have had so obvious extra cost.  You also get what you pay for I have seen some cheap jobs and the operative word is cheap!  If you are re tiling you only want to do it once!  get recommendations and ask to see previous work.

If the tiles are sound, you have a perfect base to tile over.

Hear what you say!  We have been told they''ve been badly put on with dabs in the corners, hence the propensity to break in the middle.  Consequently tiling on top is not an option!!    Appreciate we will need it screeded and we are happy to take up and dispose of existing tiles but would prefer to pay someone to do it, and therefore need recommendations.  Thanks for your repky though
