An NIE is for life but occasionally you'll come across someone, usually a motor dealer or similar, who insists on seeing a recent paper copy which is compete nonsense.

The number will still be valid as it's yours for life. The certificate won't be, though, as they have changed a lot over the years and won't be accepted

Been an ongoing subject on this forum and the consensus seems to be you have to reapply for a new certificate at the place you got your original one.

Many thanks for your response.  HOWEVER   I very much doubt if me or my wife will remember over 30 years ago as to where  we actually registered  !!  But you have been most helpful so thank you . We will have to scratch our heads or go back to our original solicitor  -  if he is still alive  !!
