Hi, hope someone can help and advise, getting a lot of mixed messages about moving furniture to Spain. I know its all a reflection of brexit but I'm bewildered by the costs to simply bring your own furniture over.

About to take possession of our holiday home in Spain and planned to move most of our furniture from UK to Spain. Some items new, others existing and used. After conversations with removal companies i'm being given mixed messages about having to pay custom/import/IVA on bringing the furniture in? A couple advised me not a problem, others stated any new items incur 20% IVA of the purchase value.

I was also advised by one that I would even have to declare value of used items and pay custom/import/IVA on them as well. Even down valuing these would equate to an awful lot of tax to bring in.

Thanks in advance for any response.

Moving personal goods to Spain for a holiday

This is a very long thread on just that subject. I have not read past the first page but it may have the answer even if it is that it depends who you get at customs.

Most household items are exepmted from taxes and duties. I would strongly recommend checking with your nearest Spanish consulate or embassy on how to properly set up paperwork for easy csutoms clearance. Exemptions apply during 6 months after taking premanent residence and to used items only incl. vehicles and professional outfits.

Get advice from the people that do it on a daily basis.

We used White and Company in the UK (Lancaster branch) to move our belongings to Spain last month and they were excellent. Not just the professional packing/unpacking but also dealing with the customs paperwork on our behalf. We looked into it beforehand and it was an absolute bureaucratic nightmare since Brexit, but White and Company dealt with all this effortlessly.

Wherever you are in the UK there will be a branch that can assist you and they are excellent. In the first instance though phone the Lancaster branch and speak to Jonathan or Debs.

Hope all goes well.

Thanks for reply, the thread is still vague and confusing though.

Hola Doug,

I retired to Spain in April 2021 and spent c£10K moving my house contents from the UK. I used a reputable company (Bishops Move) and all went to plan with no headaches for me - but cannot say the same for the removal company!. However, in hindsight, the whole exercise was a waste of money as my new style villa came furnished etc and I soon realised there is nothing in the UK that you cannot get in Spain. You may pay more for certain goods. For instance, my Kratcher K5 pressure washer I purchased in Costco Reading was lot cheaper than the product from a Spanish retailer!

Good luck with the move!
