Hi Folks

Maggie and I have been the owners of a villa in Moriara for over 35 years with visits of 30 days duration four times a year. Unfortunately Maggie has recently been unwell so we had to cancel  our last visit in October   As for myself my mobility is not what  it should be, and I have had two unfortunate falls from which I couldn't  recover even with Maggie's help  So all was resolved with assistance of the  UK NHS  Paramedics service

Being cautious regarding our next visit planned for early March  Does anyone know if such  a  similar Paramedic service  is available in Moraira please  ???

Perhaps a charity ??? Or private  individuals offering  a  stand by  emergency service for which I am able to pay.

Thank you Brummie  Alan

Presumably you will have travel insurance and it will cover your preexisting health conditions? It is unwise to travel without adequate insurance.

The UK GHIC card only covers the following:

You can use your card to get state healthcare that cannot reasonably wait until you come back to the UK (sometimes called "medically necessary healthcare"). This includes things like:

  • emergency treatment and visits to A&E
  • treatment or routine medical care for long-term or pre-existing medical conditions
  • routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth
The following links will provide more detailed information:

https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic/

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare-for-uk-nationals-visiting-spain

If you have an emergency all you need to do is dial 112 (EU equivalent to 999) they have English speaking operators if you are not conversant in Spanish. Paramedics will be dispatched and if necessary you will be taken to a public hospital. If any treatment is not covered by the GHIC card this is where your travel insurance will be important providing you have taken out the right cover.

Without sustaining actual injury I don't think simply falling down and being unable to get up would be regarded is an emergency situation which would justify a call to 112 so something private and local would be a better, and likely quicker, solution.

Moriara not being an area I'm familiar with my area I'm afraid I can't help in that respect.

Thank you for helpful comments I the U.K. they treat falls more seriously since they may have damaged something after the fall - particularly if you bash your head and May have internal bleeding on the brain

However thank you for our comment that it might be better to find someone privately which I guess is the most likely solution

They treat them rather seriously here as well. Simply call 112 and explain the situation. Seen them quite a few times turning up at shopping malls when someone has had a serious fall. Emergency treatment in Spain, which this would be, is free of charge.

But always get health insurance to supplement the GHIC.

As marcliff has stated falls are treated seriously in Spain. Only last week an elderly gentleman tripped while entering a supermarket near where I live. An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and the gentleman conveyed to hospital.

Many thanks for your helpful reply which is very reassuring  Our normal practice is to get annual Travel Insurance  We have always found that an annual policy is remarkably cheap, and avoids the hassle of individual trip policies   we get ours via "Nationwide  Bdg. Soc. "  ;  the only condition is that you have to have a "flex Account " with them.    Brummie Alan

Hello John I  found your comments not only helpful but very reassuring  -  thank you  We take out an annual polices with the Nationwide Bdg. Soc and have found them to be very reasonably priced compared with individual trip polices    -  and it saves you hassleof arranging individual trip cover  Again our thanks John  Maggie and Brummie Alan

Excellent. It is amazing the number of folk who still travel without travel insurance. Always better to be safe than sorry. Enjoy your stay in March!

There is at least one Care Agency , 3C I think, English run, whom could be contracted to supply help and nursing to you at home, should it become necessary. May be worth looking them up, so at least you are familiar with the facility.
